The British government has confirmed that it is extending its 2018 contract with Thales UK for the provision of the Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) missile systems for an additional five years.

The agreement is expected to cost £98.4 million and support 100 jobs in Belfast.

The SHORAD is able to engage a multitude of air targets, which include helicopters, jets and drones, and will be used by the British Army and Royal Marine Commandos.

UK Minister of State for Defence Procurement Jeremy Quin welcomed the announcement last week.

“This contract ensures the vital air defence capabilities, capable of dealing with a multitude of threats, are maintained and readily available to deploy,” Minister Quin said.

“The £98.4 million investment is the second major contract awarded to Northern Ireland’s defence industry in less than three months, highlighting Northern Ireland’s important contribution to the delivery of our critical defence capabilities.”
