South Australian-based DEWC Services has partnered with the University of New South Wales to drive research in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare to bolster Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities.

The recently signed memorandum of understanding is expected to enable leading C4ISREW provider DEWC Services to leverage the expertise of researchers at UNSW Canberra’s Capability Systems Centre to research on defence-focused problems in the ISREW space.

The MoU was signed shortly after DEWC Services expanded into Canberra and strengthened their existing partnership with the academic institution.

Allan Dundas, chief executive officer of DEWC Services, explained that the partnership will ensure that both organisations will be able to tackle areas of priority identified under the Defence Strategic Review.

“We are delighted to partner with UNSW Canberra to take advantage of their defence research expertise and forge a path to operationalise future discoveries to support Defence capability,” Dundas said.

“DEWC Services has a long history of success in supporting Defence on mission-critical projects in the fields of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare. UNSW are leaders in the critical area of digital engineering and all aspects related to the capability lifecycle, including design, acquisition, and sustainment. Together, we share a strong commitment to finding high-quality and innovative solutions to Defence problems.”

The partnership will facilitate information sharing, support the integration of innovative research into Defence projects, and help companies address industry needs, DEWC Services principal EW consultant and Canberra research lead Dr Aaron Matthews said.

“This research collaboration will give our company deeper insight into future technologies which will form the core of new defence capability, as we work alongside researchers who have the ability to look deeply into the technologies and capabilities of the future,” Dr Matthews said.

The partnership has also been designed to help accelerate opportunities that will enhance Australia’s defence capabilities, UNSW Canberra Associate Professor Dr Sondoss El Sawah said.

“The partnership between UNSW Canberra and DEWC Services is recognition of our complementary strengths and how we can work together to deliver better outcomes for Defence,” Dr EI Sawah said.

“UNSW Canberra has more than 50 years of service in research and education for Defence and is recognised internationally for its research excellence. As one of only three universities in the Security & Defence PLuS Alliance, the UNSW is at the forefront of defence and national security research.

“The Capability Systems Centre has extensive research and education expertise in the area of digital engineering, which encompasses modern simulation, artificial intelligence, systems engineering, which is used for military, national security, and defence applications.”
