Australian defence, space and communications technology company Electro Optic Systems will supply R600 remote weapon systems to a customer in Southeast Asia.

Australian defence, space and communications technology company Electro Optic Systems will supply R600 remote weapon systems to a customer in Southeast Asia.

The new contract, announced on 13 November, is valued around $28 million and is scheduled to commence deliveries in late 2024 and continue into 2025 and 2026. The delivered products will primarily be manufactured in EOS facilities in the United States.

The R600 remote weapon systems is mounted onto vehicles in either 7.62mm, 12.7mm or 40mm automatic grenade launcher. It can also combine multiple anti-tank or anti-air missiles into the remote weapon systems.

“EOS is proud of this achievement, which not only strengthens its presence in the Southeast Asian defence sector but also reinforces its position as a leading innovator in the global defence industry,” according to EOS chief executive officer Dr Andreas Schwer.

The R600 offers operational flexibility and a range of weapon options to suit diverse mission requirements with advanced pointing and tracking technology, according to Dr Schwer.

Earlier this month, Electro Optic Systems also unveiled a silent laser countermeasure system at the Indo Pacific 2023 International Maritime Exposition.

The non-ballistic laser Dazzler countermeasure, used against uncrewed aerial and seaborne threats, was showcased integrated with the company’s R800 remote weapon system during the expo in Sydney this week.

The Dazzler system provides operators a flexible range of kinetic and non-kinetic response options against uncrewed aerial and surface vessel threats, coupled with an R800 30mm cannon and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, according to EOS Defence Systems sales and business development vice-president Scott Hicks.

“EOS has established itself as a trusted partner for superior accuracy and counter-drone capabilities through the success of the Slinger system,” Hicks said.

“The Dazzler builds on this experience using cutting-edge Australian-designed technology to extend options for non-lethal payloads.

“It is not merely an enhancement to our capabilities; it reflects the lessons learnt from modern warfare in utilising non-lethal effects in built up areas and the innovative drive that characterises EOS as we tackle the growing employment of drones in a wide range of contemporary operating environments across the globe.

“As EOS continues to break new ground in defence technology, we remain committed to equipping allied defence forces with systems that are not only lethal but also adaptable and versatile.

“Through continued innovation and partnerships, we are redefining what’s possible in modern warfare.”

The Dazzler has been designed and developed in Australia specifically for export markets to address contemporary and emerging uncrewed aerial and surface vessel threats based on information from recent conflicts such as in Ukraine, Hicks said.

EOS has also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with New Zealand-based military technology distributor company Cratos.

The company is seeking to broaden its remote weapon system export market and provide the opportunity for further interoperability between the New Zealand and Australian Defence Forces, providing the same access to technology and in-country support, according to Hicks.
