A Melbourne-based defence company has won the 2017 Governor of Victoria Export Award for Innovation Excellence.

A Melbourne-based defence company has won the 2017 Governor of Victoria Export Award for Innovation Excellence.

The award, taken out by Harris C4i, recognises the state's most successful and innovative exporter.

Harris C4i creates world-leading technology for use in interoperable communications solutions for mission-critical environments. Their solutions are vital to the 24/7 operations and effective incident responses of organisations in 35 countries and across a range of sectors such as aviation, defence, public safety, utilities, transport and resources.

The company was the first to deploy high availability IP-at-the-core technology to the global air defence market and now, a decade later, the company has over 200 systems deployed.

"Harris C4i is honoured to receive this award recognising our achievements in innovation and exporting," said Harris C4i managing director Peter Harrison.

"It is a result of our commitment to guide product development toward the needs of international markets. Over the last five years, we have seen a continued growth in our global sales, and during FY2017 our revenue doubled, with 90 per cent attributable to exports. Key to this growth has been our international sales team and our exceptional Australian engineering team, whose innovation keep our solutions at the forefront of technology and global developments."
