Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has congratulated the Australian Marine Complex Common User Facility (AMC-CUF), located at Henderson, for 15 years of successful operation.

Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has congratulated the Australian Marine Complex Common User Facility (AMC-CUF), located at Henderson, for 15 years of successful operation.

The Australian Marine Complex (AMC) is a world-class centre for manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, maintenance and technology development, servicing the defence, marine, oil and gas, and resource industries.

The state government-owned asset aims to capitalise on growing potential in marine, defence, mining, and oil and gas industries by enabling delivery of major engineering projects in WA.

Premier McGowan said, "Over the past 15 years the AMC has generated $2.5 billion for the state economy, supported more than 440 projects and created more than 40,000 local jobs, showing what can happen when we do economic development the right way."

Located in WA, 23 kilometres south of Perth, the AMC has been developed to enhance the opportunities created by the clustering of industries and is home to the largest marine industry in Australia.

Key Common User Facility details:

  • 80m x 60m fabrication hall including 200-tonne portal crane with 32-metre clearance below the hook
  • Floating dock with 12,000-tonne capacity
  • Self-propelled modular transporters – 4,500-tonne capacity
  • 40-hectare laydown assembly area
  • Project offices
  • Worker amenities
  • Workshops and warehouse facilities
  • Six wharves including two deep water heavy load-out wharves
  • Underground reticulated services for power, water, telecom and sewer
  • 24-hour managed security
  • Links to the high-wide load corridors (9m x 9m x 50m)

The AMC has established international credentials for the repair, maintenance and construction of naval and commercial vessels, as well as infrastructure for the fabrication and assembly of offshore oil and gas modules. The Common User Facility has a broad market focus and has been designed so a number of projects can be undertaken concurrently by different companies.

This crucial piece of strategic infrastructure is unique in Australia with the diversity of work ranging from oil and gas operators, Department of Defence, mining companies and shipbuilding.

The AMC is integral to Australia’s frontline defence, and is an important asset in maintaining the Royal Australian Navy fleet. The CUF has facilitated major works and repair programs for RAN’s Collins Class submarines, Anzac frigates and supply tankers.

The AMC-CUF is home to the world’s most technically advanced floating dock, which can lift vessels of up to 12,000 tonnes out of the water for service. Its four wharves can accommodate vessels of up to 300 metres in length, and provide adequate berthing space for major works including ship conversions, refits and repairs.

The AMC-CUF is also home to ASC West – a purpose-built submarine repair facility and the WA headquarters of ASC, an Australian-owned prime defence contractor and builder of the Collins Class submarine and Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer.

ASC’s through-life support contract will see the Collins Class submarines maintained at the CUF over the next 25 years. Warfare systems developer Raytheon Australia and other defence contractors, including BAE Systems, also reside within the AMC’s precincts.
