Talented engineering students will be able to study for a dual master’s degree – specifically in mechanical engineering and acoustics – to be offered in Australia and France, supporting the development of specialised defence industry-focused engineers.

The announcement, made last week by the University of Adelaide and French engineering school Ecole Centrale de Lyon, is the latest in the university’s growing commitment to defence skills, education and research.

The Dual Degree Agreement was signed by representatives of both institutions in Canberra. The University of Adelaide’s deputy vice-chancellor (academic), Professor Pascale Quester, said, "With this elite program, we offer our leading students the opportunity to study at the heart of a co-operation with an international institution that is at the forefront of research in the field, and has a remarkable network of industrial partners.

“Students graduating with this degree will launch their career on the basis of a very strong scientific, technical and cross-cultural foundation, and have the manifest ability to pursue a global path with industry or academia.”

The new international master’s program will see students complete two semesters at their home institution and two at their host institution and will be offered from 2020.

Students who complete the program will be awarded two master’s degrees: a Master of Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Adelaide, and a Master of Science in Acoustics from Ecole Centrale de Lyon.

ECL is a multidisciplinary French graduate and post-graduate engineering school and research institution. It trains highly qualified generalist engineers who are capable of mastering complex issues and exercising top-level technical managerial responsibilities in an international context.

The University of Adelaide is a research and teaching institution centred on discovering new knowledge, pursuing innovation and preparing the educated leaders of tomorrow. As Australia’s third oldest university, Adelaide has a well-established reputation for excellence and progressive thinking.
