New Defence award unveiled for young STEM innovators

Building on recent support, young Australians studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are encouraged to apply for the newly launched Australian Defence Force Future Innovators Award.

Building on recent support, young Australians studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are encouraged to apply for the newly launched Australian Defence Force Future Innovators Award.

A cash prize made out to innovative year 10 and year 12 high school students, the award will help the next generation of STEM graduates to get a head-start on their careers and demonstrate initiative to future employers.

The news comes shortly after the Force Structure Plan, released earlier this month, reinforced the need identified in the 2016 Defence White Paper for a highly capable STEM-equipped ADF.

“This government knows how integral STEM skills are to Australia’s expertise, productivity and prosperity. A passion for excellence in STEM starts at school, which is why investing in awards like this is so important,” said Minister Reynolds.

“With STEM skills being the foundation of more than 40 per cent of full-time ADF roles, we’re looking for young innovators to join our impressive STEM ranks and tackle the challenges of a fast evolving, technological world.”

Reynolds added that, beyond the funds made out, the award will help ensure students are aware that Navy, Army and Air Force will value their skills.

As part of the award process, ADF service men and women working in the STEM field will share their skills and experiences with these rising young talents, speaking to the exciting opportunities available across the services to work with frontier technologies and to make a difference to Australia’s security and future.

Nominations are now open for awards with cash prizes of $250 for year 10 recipients and $550 for year 12 recipients
