Government expands support for ADF partner employment

Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester has announced changes to the Defence Partner Employment Assistance Program to support partners of Australian Defence Force members who are out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester has announced changes to the Defence Partner Employment Assistance Program to support partners of Australian Defence Force members who are out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Partners of Australian Defence Force members who are out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic will be better supported through changes to the Defence Partner Employment Assistance Program (PEAP).

Minister Chester said the coronavirus had affected all Australians, including the partners of Australia’s ADF personnel, and this change was just one of the ways we can support them.

"ADF partners make incredible sacrifices and the deployment and posting cycles can have a significant affect, particularly on their employment. Through the PEAP, partners can access up to $1,500 for employment-related initiatives, previously only available when they relocated to a new posting location," Minister Chester said.

The PEAP funds employment-related initiatives such as development of a professional resume or resume coaching, identification of transferrable skills, employment options and job placement advice, job search techniques and strategies, and development of an online employment profile.

Minister Chester added, "The changes to the PEAP mean partners will be able to access the program at any time during the posting cycle and regardless of how long they have been in a location. This change will support those Defence partners affected by the coronavirus pandemic and potentially inject up to $4 million into the Australian Career Management Industry in the coming financial year."

The PEAP also offers, based on a partner’s employment needs, Job Search Preparation workshops to assist in securing employment sooner in their location. The enhancements will provide both improved employment outcomes and a vital boost to the career management industry.

Defence's PEAP provides funding towards initiatives to assist ADF partners with the difficulties of finding employment when the member is relocated on posting or medically transitioning.

Due to effects of the COVID-19 health crisis on the employment market, certain eligibility conditions, including the requirement for a partner to have relocated with the member on posting or have joined the member in the posting location in the previous two years, have been temporarily suspended. These changes will be reviewed by April 2021.

Eligible partners of ADF personnel can apply for up to $1,500 funding to access the following employment-related initiatives:

  • Mandatory fees for professional re-registration required under legislation;
  • Professional employment services:
    • Development of a personalised resume and/or resume coaching;
    • Identification of transferrable skills;
    • Employment options and job placement advice;
    • Job search techniques and strategies;
    • Development of an online employment profile;
    • Application and selection criteria coaching; and
    • Preparation and presentation coaching for interviews.

Interested partners should read the PEAP guidelines before completing the PEAP application form. A quote from your chosen provider must be provided as part of your application.

Applicants should anticipate that it will take up to 28 days from receipt of a complete application (including completed application form and required attachments) for an assessment to be made. Applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application.
