Defence confirmed that it will be supporting the Indonesian search effort to find the KRI Nanggala, which went missing this week with 53 submariners onboard.

The Department of Defence confirmed that Indonesia has accepted Australia’s support to find the KRI Nanggala with 53 submariners onboard.
According to the Department of Defence, HMA Ships Ballarat and Sirius have begun their approach to the area of operations. Defence outlined that the Ballarat has sonar capabilities alongside an MH-60 helicopter, and is expected to reach the location today.
It is expected that the Sirius will be able to provide ongoing logistical support.
Rear Admiral Mark Hammond AM, Commander of Joint Task Force 635, outlined that the Australian Defence Force will support Indonesia throughout the process.
“My thoughts are with the submariners of KRI Nanggala, their families and the Indonesian people. As always, we stand ready to assist our fellow mariners in the Indonesian Navy,” RADM Hammond said.
“These two Australian ships will help expand the search area and extend the duration of search effort.”
Defence has confirmed that it will continue to support Indonesia.
