The prime has been tapped to ramp up production of its missile radar systems.
The US Army Sentinel A4 Program Office has awarded an accelerated contract to Lockheed Martin for the production of five additional radar systems designed to detect and identify cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, and rocket, artillery and mortar threats.
The contract has been awarded two years ahead of the timeline for the development process in previous programs, with the new Sentinel A4s scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2022.
“The Lockheed Martin team truly understands the importance that this system holds for our warfighters,” Troy Allen, program manager for the US Army Sentinel A4 program office, said.
“Once equipped with the Sentinel A4, our soldiers will operate in a more secure warfighting environment, improving capabilities against multiple evolving threats.”
Mark Mekker, director of Army Radars for Lockheed Martin, lauded the team’s contribution to bringing the production phase forward.
“It’s not only representative of the hard work of our employees, but also the US Army’s confidence in the experience and performance of Lockheed Martin,” Mekker said.
The initial Sentinel A4 contract for 18 radars was awarded in 2019, with the first Sentinel A4 system completed in August.
The first five radar systems of the original contract are projected to be delivered in March next year.
The features of the new air and missile defence radar include enhanced surveillance, detection and classification capabilities, aimed at protecting US Army manoeuvre formations.
