Principal author of the Commonwealth’s 2013 Defence White Paper and former deputy secretary for the Department of Defence Professor Brendan Sargeant sadly passed away this weekend while swimming in NSW.

Principal author of the Commonwealth’s 2013 Defence White Paper and former deputy secretary for the Department of Defence Professor Brendan Sargeant sadly passed away this weekend while swimming in NSW.

Professor Sargeant began his career in the Department of Defence in 1983 as an Assistant Research Officer before embarking on a distinguished career across several leading Commonwealth government departments, later being appointed as the deputy secretary – strategy for the Department of Defence in 2010.

Over following years, Professor Sargeant was appointed to serve Defence as deputy secretary reform and governance, and associate secretary before working with the Australian National University’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre after his retirement.

During his time at the Department, Professor Sargeant fought to ensure that Defence was future ready including managing Defence’s Frist Principles Review and spearheading the 2013 Defence White Paper.

“Defence will always remember Brendan Sargeant as a man of integrity, with a purposeful and searching mind and great insight into the strategic challenges facing Australia,” a tribute from Greg Moriarty Secretary of the Department of Defence and Chief of the Defence Force General Angus Campbell said.

Professor Sargeant passed during a swimming incident over the weekend.
