Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are set to bolster production of the anti-tank missiles after securing additional funding.

The Javelin Joint Venture, a cooperative between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, has been awarded a $311 million (AU$460 million) production contract to expand the stock of the anti-tank missiles.

Specifically, the contract involves the procurement of Javelin systems and production support for the US Army and international customers Lithuania and Jordan, as well as the delivery of more than 1,800 Javelins to war-torn Ukraine.

“With usage increasing across the globe, the Javelin Joint Venture is working closely with the Army to meet these increased demands and deliver this critical precision weapon system to domestic and international customers,” Dave Pantano, Javelin Joint Venture vice president and Lockheed Martin Javelin program director, said.

“Our team continues to remain committed to delivering reliable and battle-proven products that demonstrate performance excellence.”

Lockheed Martin currently produces approximately 2,100 Javelin missiles each year, supported by Raytheon’s Command Launch Units.

Since its establishment, the Javelin Joint Venture has produced more than 50,000 Javelin missiles and more than 12,000 reusable Command Launch Units.

Javelin is expected to remain in service with the US military until 2050, with the capability continually reassessed for modification in line with evolving warfighting requirements.

The Javelin is billed as a versatile anti-tank and multi-target guided missile system, offering fire-and-forget capability over a range of up to four kilometres in most operational conditions.

The missile has been deployed by Ukrainian forces, helping to repel Russia’s armoured vehicle offensive.

“As Javelin continues to demonstrate its reliability and effectiveness, its reputation as the premier battle-proven, fire-and-forget precision anti-tank weapon grows,” Marek Wolert, Javelin Joint Venture president and Raytheon Missiles & Defense’s Javelin program director, said.

“Our commitment to delivering this exceptional weapon system to global ground forces is unwavering.”

This latest contract comes just four months after the joint venture was awarded two production contracts for Javelin missiles and associated equipment and services, worth a combined US$309 million (AU$442.5 million).
