Under the deal, Australia would receive 255 Javelin FGM-148F missiles including five fly-to-buy missiles (for live fire testing), US technical assistance, logistical and program support.

The US man-portable anti-tank guided missile uses a fire-and-forget medium-range missile. It has already been operated extensively in Afghanistan and Iraq, and more recently in Ukraine. The improved 148F version is fitted with a multi-purpose warhead for use against personnel, tanks, buildings, and light armour vehicles.

“Australia is one of our most important allies in the Western Pacific. The strategic location of this political and economic power contributes significantly to ensuring peace and economic stability in the region,” said a public statement by the US Statement Department.

“It is vital to the US national interest to assist our ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.

“The proposed sale will improve the Australian Army’s capability to meet current and future threats by maintaining and increasing its anti-armour capability.”

Contractors involved for the sale would include a Javelin Joint Venture between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Missiles & Defense.
