The Australian Defence Force and Papua New Guinea Defence Force have officially opened refurbished accommodation at Taurama Barracks in PNG.

Chief of the Defence Force General Angus Campbell and PNGDF Commander Major General Mark Goina opened the facility with PNGDF members from 1st Royal Pacific Island Regiment and Australian Army personnel earlier this month.

Taurama Barracks has undergone 12 months of construction in Port Moresby, funded by the Australian government.

General Campbell said the building is a symbol of the deep relationship between PNG and Australia.

“This building represents the current and future partnership between our two nations,” GEN Campbell said.

“Australia is proud to support PNG to deliver infrastructure projects that improve the living and working conditions of the hardworking men, women, and families of the PNG Defence Force.

“Australia and PNG share a close defence partnership, one that holds a deep, enduring, and significant part of the story of our two nations.”

Australian Army personnel have been deployed on Exercise Olgeta Warrior to conduct training activities with the PNGDF to develop military skills, leadership, operational planning, vehicle maintenance, logistics and health.

PNGDF Commander Major General Mark Goina said the barracks would bring further benefits and comfort to service men and woman within the PNGDF.

“This occasion signifies why the importance of the partnership between the Australian and PNG Defence Forces should and will remain strong,” Major General Goina said.
