AMA enhances training offering under LAND 8710-1A bid

Australian Maritime Alliance has teamed up with Pivot Maritime International to provide simulation and training services under AMA’s bid for LAND 8710 Phase 1A Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel – Medium.

Australian Maritime Alliance has teamed up with Pivot Maritime International to provide simulation and training services under AMA’s bid for LAND 8710 Phase 1A Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel – Medium.

Under the partnership, AMA has developed a training program that leverages Pivot’s simulators to support the transition of Australian service personnel from the legacy LMC-8 craft to AMA’s proposed Oboe LMV-M design.

The partnership is expected to enable the upskilling of Australian soldiers to deploy the Oboe across an array of challenging environments, including in satellite-denied settings and Blue Water engagement scenarios.

In June, AMA, made up of Serco Australia and Civmec, announced a deep review into the organisation’s offering for the LAND 8710 LMV-M in light of renewed focus identified in the Defence Strategic Review.

The review examined AMA’s design, build, and commissioning and service introduction plans, ensuring the Australian-wide industry team and Henderson-based infrastructure were ready to deliver the Oboe in line with Army requirements.

AMA’s Oboe LMV-M delivers a 200m2 vehicle deck, dual ramp configuration, and proven hull form, and are ready now to lift all of Army’s current and planned future combat vehicle fleet, including LAND 8113 HIMARS and LAND 19 Phase 7B short-range air defence (SHORAD) Hawkei-based battery vehicles.

The latest announcement is expected to enable the Australian Defence Force to onboard the Oboe, should AMA be selected for the program.

“As a part of the AMA’s solution, our simulators will play a prominent role in addressing the considerable vessel handling differences Army personnel can expect when transitioning from the legacy LMC-8 Landing Craft to the significantly larger next-generation LMV-M vessel,” Jeffrey Hawkins, Pivot Maritime International managing director, said.

“At just over 45 metres in length, the AMA’s proposed Oboe design will offer significantly increased load carrying and sea keeping capabilities over the LCM-8 and allow Army planners to deploy the LMV-M force at considerably longer ranges throughout the Southwest Pacific and around Australia’s northern coast.”

The simulators will train the Australian service personnel in an immersive environment, David Astbury, Serco’s general manager, maritime operations, explained.

“The AMA has invested considerable effort in working with Australia’s premier maritime training and simulation experts to develop a wholistic program that will allow Army personnel to test their mariner skills and gain confidence within a safe and controlled simulation environment,” Astbury explained.

“Pivot’s Australian-developed simulators are at the leading edge of immersive environments and allow personnel to learn new skills and trial various operations and manoeuvres across a diverse range of simulated environmental and operational conditions.”
