CPB Contractors undertakes design development for Woomera Redevelopment Program

The engineering-led construction, mining, services and public private partnerships leader will undertake the work in a joint venture with Downer, after being selected by the Australian government’s Department of Defence.

The design development phase has now commenced for the Woomera Range Complex in South Australia, approximately 450 kilometres north-west of Adelaide.

In line with the objectives of the Defence Strategic Review and pending government and Parliamentary approvals, a delivery phase consisting of upgrades to buildings, services, and infrastructure is expected to follow, with an estimated value of between $500 million and $750 million.

“We are pleased to bring our infrastructure and services capabilities, and our experience in delivering remote projects, to the Woomera Redevelopment Program,” according to CIMIC Group executive chairman Juan Santamaria.

“We have a long history of working with the Department of Defence to enhance and sustain base and operational environments.

“This important project will support Defence personnel with improved facilities and bring opportunities to the local area.”

CIMIC Group comprises the construction businesses CPB Contractors, Leighton Asia and Broad Construction, as well as mining and mineral processing companies Thiess (joint control) and Sedgman, as well as services specialist UGL and development and investment arm Pacific Partnerships – all supported by in-house engineering consultancy EIC Activities.

“CPB Contractors has the expertise and experience to ensure the contract is delivered in line with all operational and security requirements,” said CPB Contractors managing director Jason Spears.

“Our team will give priority to maximising the opportunities for local community, industry and Indigenous participation during this and future phases.”

The Department of Defence is redeveloping the Air Force’s Woomera Range Complex, using a managing contractor model. The scope of work in the Base Sector North – Technical Area and Airfield includes refurbishment and/or replacement of two hangars; refurbishment of the aprons, taxiway and road upgrades; delivery of ordnance loading aprons and supporting infrastructure that can accommodate one large aircraft and one fighter aircraft; upgrades to headquarters and operation command office; refurbishment of the mechanical equipment operations and maintenance section workshop; upgraded infrastructure, including water, power, sewer, firefighting, communications, drainage, and lighting; and demolition of redundant facilities.

Scope of work in the Base Sector West includes living-in accommodation; headquarters; syndicate room and dining facility; upgraded infrastructure including water, power, sewer, firefighting, communications, drainage, and lighting; and demolition of redundant facilities.

Scope of work in the Base Sector South Woomera Village includes new accommodation, including LIA for short- to medium-term stay and hotel rooms; new social and community facilities; upgraded infrastructure including, power, wastewater treatment, communications, water, firefighting, drainage, erosion control, and irrigation.
