Queensland metal fabricator Rocklea Pressed Metal has begun its first delivery of “true-to-life” internal structure modules for the Australian Defence Force’s new tactical trainer.

Rocklea Pressed Metal (Rockpress) is engaged by Thomas Global Systems to supply modules for the M1A2 Abrams System Enhancement Program Version 3 main battle tank immersive tactical trainer, delivering its first batch in early October. The first complete trainer is scheduled for delivery to the ADF in March next year.

The three “cockpit-like” principal modular units are designed to accommodate technology responsible for generating simulated scenarios.

“The three components to be assembled consist of the turret module, the driver’s module, and an e-rack unit,” according to Rockpress program manager Zach McCabe.

“The turret module is designed as a fabricated exoskeletal framework constructed from SHS (square hollow section), featuring internal sheet metal linings meticulously configured to replicate the internal layout of an Abrams tank. This module is intended to authentically recreate the structural components within the tank’s turret.

“In contrast, the driver’s module is envisaged as a compact structure specially designed to house the driver’s station, effectively simulating the confined spatial environment experienced by the tank’s operator. This module is designed with precision to offer a true-to-life representation of the driver’s compartment, ensuring a realistic training experience.

“Lastly, the e-rack unit serves as a dedicated enclosure for the sophisticated electronic components and servers indispensable for the seamless operation of the simulations. This unit has been designed to provide secure housing and optimal functionality for the electronics, guaranteeing the smooth execution of the simulated scenarios.”

Twelve finished trainers, due to be completed by January 2025, are designed to train Australian Army tank crews before they accept the new M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks by fully simulating an M1A2 tank environment with crew positions for gunner, driver, and an additional instructor station to enable system training control.

“Securing a contract like this signifies a significant milestone for Rockpress, particularly in terms of industry recognition and market presence within the defence sector,” McCabe said.

“Successfully executing a high-profile project for Thomas Global Systems will underscore Rockpress’ expertise and capabilities within the defence industry. This achievement can elevate our reputation and attract the attention of other potential defence clients and partners seeking similar services.

“While in its infancy, the success of this contract to date is growing our defence capabilities and establishing Rockpress as a trusted manufacturer and supplier in the defence industry.

“As we continue to work with Thomas Global Systems to deliver these training modules for the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Tactical Training System, Rockpress seeks to foster enduring partnerships and expand our manufacturing applications within the Australian defence supply chain.

“We are currently working with the likes of Rheinmetall on some small componentry … (and) we are working on SEA 1442 Phase 5 for an undisclosed customer which sees Rockpress fabricating satellite base structures.”
