K2 main battle tanks will be produced in Poland under a new agreement between the country and South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz met with Minister of Defense of South Korea Shin Won-sik at the Representative Center of the Ministry of National Defense in Pruszków on 20 June.

“We have full confirmation of the will to cooperate and provide all technical information as soon as possible so that Polish armament industry can prepare for the production of K2 tanks in Poland,” Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz said after the end of talks with the South Korean delegation.

“This is a huge effort of the Polish Armaments Group. All efforts and resources are directed towards commencing the production as soon as possible. We are talking about another executive contract for 180 K2 tanks, which we want to sign during Kielce defence industry exposition.

“The goal is for tanks to be produced in Poland starting with current tranche.”

The K2 main battle tank is equipped with a 120-millimetre smoothbore main gun, autoloader system and integrated fire control system as well as hydro-pneumatic suspension system and dynamic track tension system. It also has various protection systems such as Battle Management System, Active Protection System, composite armour, and ERA.

“We talked with Defense Minister Shin Won-sik, among others, about financing military equipment purchased in South Korea for the Polish Armed Forces, but importantly, we have also presented the offer of the Polish armament industry of possible interest for the Korean side,” the Deputy Minister said.
