LAND 19 team takes shape as deal struck between Kongsberg and Daronmont

Kongsberg Defence Australia has announced it has selected Daronmont Technologies to provide shelter and shelter equipped solutions for the NASAMS system’s Fire Distribution Centre.

Kongsberg Defence Australia has announced it has selected Daronmont Technologies to provide shelter and shelter equipped solutions for the NASAMS system’s Fire Distribution Centre.

Along with Raytheon Australia, Kongsberg will deliver LAND 19 Phase 7B – a ground-based surface-to-air missile system with beyond-visual-range capability for the Australian Army.

NASAMS is a state-of-the-art weapons system selected by 10 other nations that will enable the Army to quickly detect, engage and destroy aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missile threats.

This announcement comes following the contract signing on 20 June for the Australian government's LAND 19 Phase 7B program.

The system will be assembled in Mawson Lakes, South Australia, at a new Centre for Joint Integration that will become Australia’s newest purpose-built, defence-systems integration facility.

The selection of Daronmont Technologies into the LAND 19 Phase 7B supply chain marks the first of several Australian industries to be involved in the design and production of NASAMS for Australia. It follows the successful completion of an extensive testing and evaluation process, including an assessment of Daronmont’s product range, technical expertise and production management systems.

The supply chain manager for Kongsberg Defence Australia, Sally Dunbar, said Daronmont’s performance and technological level was highly impressive.

"New supply chain partners have to meet the highest standard of capability and product performance to participate in the program. Our goal is to deliver a highly effective air defence system that will contribute to the protection of our service men and women from modern airborne threats," Dunbar said.

Daronmont Technologies CEO Ben Norris said he was very pleased to have been selected by Kongsberg to make a valuable contribution to the LAND 19 Phase 7B capability.

"Our Australian designed and locally manufactured shelter systems are ideally suited to a range of C4I applications like the Fire Distribution Centre, and we look forward to developing a lasting partnership and further opportunities with Kongsberg," Norris said.

Michael Ward, Raytheon Australia managing director, welcomed the announcement, telling Defence Connect, "LAND 19 Phase 7B is a program which incorporates a complex suite of sensors, effectors, command and control, and vehicles – sourced from across the globe, with integration and final assembly occurring here in Australia. Together with Kongsberg Defence Australia, we are committed to establishing an enduring sovereign capability though a comprehensive Australian Industry Capability plan. I am pleased to join Kongsberg Defence Australia today in welcoming Daronmont to our team.”

The NASAMS acquisition brings transformational change to the Army’s existing force protection capability, including a progression from man-portable GBAD capability to a fully networked and distributed system, these advancements allow the Army to counter complex air threats beyond visual range and significantly increases protection coverage for Australian soldiers.

This announcement marks a major step forward in Raytheon Australia and partner Kongsberg's push to build sovereign capability in this area, as evidenced by their national industry roadshow where the companies engaged with almost 200 local firms. Additionally, Raytheon Australia has ambitions to export elements of the system from the new Adelaide facility.
