Shadow Assistant Minister for Defence
Meryl Swanson was born and raised in Heddon Greta near Kurri Kurri NSW. She attended the local high school and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts/Communications at nearby Newcastle University.
Before entering politics, Meryl Swanson was a Newcastle-based radio announcer, but her career history includes business manager for Hunter Region Organisation of Councils, executive director of Hunter Tourism and a proud small business owner.
In July 2016, Meryl Swanson was elected to the House of Representatives as the first female Member for Paterson. Upon her re-election in 2019, Meryl Swanson was appointed as Chair of Labor’s Regional Jobs Taskforce to complete a thorough investigation into unemployment rates across regional and rural Australia.
As of 2020 Meryl was appointed to the role of Shadow Assistant Minister for Defence and has proudly been embracing the role with the vision of building a strong policy platform for a future Labor Government that embraces the need to invest in Defence Industry and ensure Government support local innovation.
Meryl Swanson’s priorities for her region include ensuring industry is supported to create jobs, ensure we have fair funding for schools and hospitals, deliver better infrastructure to cope with a growing population in the Hunter and address the alarming issues of youth unemployment.
