The Vital Case for Australia's Sovereign Combat Management System

In an age where the maritime domain remains a contested canvas of power and politics, the maintenance and assertion of national security through naval power is more than just a matter of policy.

In an age where the maritime domain remains a contested canvas of power and politics, the maintenance and assertion of national security through naval power is more than just a matter of policy.

Australia is at the cusp of a paradigm shift in maritime strategy, underscored by the release of the Australian Government’s blueprint for a larger and a more capable surface combatant fleet for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

At the heart of this investment lies a decision that is not just about technology, but about fundamental sovereignty and operational capability.

The Combat Management System (CMS) is the brain that integrates and processes the many data streams from the ship's sensors and weapons. This is the technology that directs and controls the ship’s combat capability to ensure it wins the fight and achieves the mission.

Saab delivers this capability to the RAN as their Australian CMS (AusCMS) partner, a strategic relationship which represents a substantive example of a strategic sovereign defence partnership.

Saab has a thirty-five year history of collaboration with the RAN, developing, maintaining, sustaining and upgrading AusCMS to meet future needs as threats change. It is deployed across the RAN’s surface fleet and provides officers and sailors with a capable, scalable and familiar operating system.

Saab has invested in an Australian workforce of more than 1,000 employees including engineers, project professionals, and logistics experts. The commitment to developing a national workforce is not just a strategic investment; it represents Saab’s commitment to reinforce Australia's maritime strategy.

Our footprint spans the continent, with a dedicated team committed to support AusCMS now and into the future.

In Q4 this year, this workforce will grow with the opening of Saab’s Sovereign Combat Systems Collaboration Centre. The Centre will provide industry, academia and government with an ecosystem to develop world-class combat systems capabilities, supporting programs including the Commonwealth’s continuous naval shipbuilding plan.

The choice of AusCMS is a sovereign one. It defines the RAN's operational capability and the efficiency of its operations to ensure the safety and security of our sea lines of communication and maritime trade. It is a choice that underscores not just technological expedience but, more primarily, strategic self-reliance.

To safeguard our waters, our shores, and our future security, Saab’s proven, sovereign AusCMS is not just a preference; it's an imperative.
