Defence Connect is urging prime contractors from right across the country to enter the Australian Defence Industry Awards 2023 for a chance to be recognised on the national stage.

The Australian Defence Industry Awards is the pinnacle program that champions the top businesses and professionals in the Australian defence industry.

There are 10 individual and 19 group award categories on offer for entrants this year, including Prime Contractor of the Year.

Submit an entry or nominate a worthy colleague by Thursday, 29 June 2023, and don’t miss out!

The Prime Contractor of the Year award recognises the prime contractor that has most effectively supported Australia’s defence and national security capabilities through their participation in the defence industry while demonstrating business excellence.

It includes all defence primes, no matter the specialisation, operating across domains such as land, aerospace, cyber, naval, space, weapons and weapons systems, systems engineering and integration, C4ISR, multidomain, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), and all other defence-related disciplines.

All defence prime contractors are encouraged to participate, regardless of revenue or geographic location/s.

The period of assessment is calendar year 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022.

In their submissions, entrants must answer a series of questions (a maximum 400 words per answer) as part of the assessment criteria.

They must outline their product or service, and provide insight into their distribution, customers, pricing, and approach to customer service.

The submission is also an opportunity for prime contractors to highlight their major achievements or milestones over the assessment period, and how their business’ leadership contributed to the outcome.

Moreover, entrants must outline their unique selling points or competitive advantages and how these translate into market dominance or business potential.

Furthermore, they must answer how their business will support employment in the defence industry alongside ongoing upskilling for an Australian workforce.

In unison with demonstrating how any innovation has shaped the business, submissions must detail how prime contractors have supported the Australian supply chain and helped strengthen Australian sovereign industrial capability through engaging, training, and expanding domestic partner businesses and opening up knowledge or intellectual property transfer.

Provide supporting documents

In addition, entrants are encouraged to provide and refer to a maximum of four attached supporting materials for the judges’ consideration to strengthen their entry.

This material could include financial or business metrics, images, statistics, transcripts, media coverage, accolades, testimonials or recommendations/references, and other relevant information.

Defence Connect is also encouraging entrants to submit an optional short video up to 30 seconds long answering the question: “What does business success mean to you?”

The video is in addition to the four supporting documents.

To be eligible for this award, the nominee must be an Australian business, organisation or institution (or a division of a global business registered to trade in Australia) that focuses on supporting the Australian defence supply chain.

It is open to all businesses trading for at least two full calendar years from 31 December 2020.

All information provided needs to be unclassified. All information will be treated as confidential and only shared with the specific judges that assess this category.

Set yourselves apart in a competitive industry

The Australian Defence Industry Awards recognise people and businesses rather than products and platforms.

They acknowledge all defence industry stakeholders — including primes, small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), academic institutions, and associations, as well as top-performing individuals such as defence executives, Indigenous and female leaders, students, scientists, technicians, and academics.

Winning an award could set businesses apart from their competitors when attracting and retaining the best talent and strengthen their position when winning defence projects or contracts.

Recognition of individuals on a national stage could underpin their career advancement.

Judged by a panel that includes former senior Australian Defence Force leaders, academics, business executives, entrepreneurs, and innovators, an Australian Defence Industry Award is peer-reviewed recognition of the capabilities in defence and passion for propelling the industry forward by participants.
