Toll is focused on empowering Defence capabilities with cutting-edge warehousing and distribution solutions delivering innovation, agility and resilience.

Warehousing and distribution solutions are, and have always been, crucial to the success of the Defence industry due to the constant state of operational readiness required.

A well-managed warehousing and distribution network allows the ADF to adapt to changing operational requirements, whether it's disaster relief efforts or military exercises. Having the right resources in the right place at the right time is critical.

By implementing sustainable practices in warehousing and distribution, the ADF can reduce its environmental footprint and support broader national and global sustainability goals. In times of crisis or conflict, a robust warehousing and distribution infrastructure ensures that essential equipment can be efficiently managed and delivered, even in challenging conditions.

An effective warehousing and distribution system provides a strategic advantage by improving the ADF's ability to support allies and sustain military operations effectively. Investing in advanced warehousing and distribution solutions is essential for the ADF to enhance its operational capabilities, logistical efficiency, security, and overall effectiveness in safeguarding the nation's interests and security.

As a top 20 prime contractor to the ADF, Toll understands what Defence needs and how they can enable success. Perry Singh, President of Toll Government and Defence, is proud and passionate about how the team can drive and influence evolution on behalf of the ADF. “As a strategic partner, we provide a broad range of services including warehousing, distribution, logistics, contingency and sustainment services, just to name a few”.

When Defence sought a partner for their Commodity Reform Program (CRP), Toll leveraged its strong 4PL capabilities and industry collaboration to create the STOCCMANS system, specifically for Defence’s needs.

The key objective of CRP was to implement the Government’s smart-buying principles, using multiple suppliers across Australia to reduce costs and significantly improve the sourcing, procurement, delivery, and management of Defence commodities.

Toll combined capability, experience, and resources to effectively deliver on Defence requirements. Toll’s bespoke 4PL ordering system dubbed ‘the Amazon of Defence’ due to the breadth and functionality of its procurement and logistical capabilities, has been operating for nearly 5 years.

By critically analysing data and managing the end-to-end creation and optimisation of the commodity supply chain, Toll has reduced the complexity and the administration burden of commodity procurement activities for Defence.

Mr. Singh believes in partnering with customers to create a deeper understanding of the customers’ requirements and offering innovative and cost-effective ways to create solutions. “When we better understand our customers unique business needs, we can tailor solutions for their success.” It's this approach that has led them to deliver strategic relationships focused on providing the highest level of services for the best value.

One such example involves leading apparel retailer Specialty Fashion Group (SFG). The popularity and convenience of online shopping has given rise to a competitive, global market where shoppers expect choice, reliability and exceptional service from retailers and service providers alike. In collaboration with SFG, Toll’s design and solutions team undertook a three-year project to create a highly specialised and customised processing and fulfilment centre fit for modern retailers.

Set across 33,830sqm and fitted with 15,600sqm of automation equipment, including driverless forklifts, automatic carton optimising machines and an automated eCommerce processing area, it ensures fast, efficient, reliable and cost-effective order fulfilment that enables retailers to deliver product to their bricks-and-mortar stores and online customers faster than ever before.

It operates as a multi-user hub, where Toll’s customers can benefit from a customised supply chain solution with complete omni-channel capability and fully flexible operating hours including 24/7 fulfilment ability. Importantly, it also delivers major safety, productivity, cost, service and environmental benefits for their people, customers and the community they operate in.

Toll has unique and varied experience across a range of sectors including healthcare, retail, consumer, automotive, industrial, mining, energy, and technology. So, the learning, innovation, and ability to implement and revolutionize across sectors is an attractive proposition for any industry or partner seeking new ideas and evolution.

Following sharp increases in demand for products during COVID-19, Toll and Mars Wrigley strengthened its partnership by investing in a new state-of-the-art facility, shifting to automated warehouse operations, in Truganina (west of Melbourne).

Built to manage national storage, dispatch and replenishment operations, the dedicated facility is fully automated to optimise warehouse operations to accommodate for current and forecast future demand growth.

Seventeen Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are in operation and are purpose-built to operate across different areas of the distribution centre. The new facility removes the need for offsite storage, which was not possible under previous supply chain models.

The optimisation of warehouse operations using AGVs enabled Toll to utilise the new facility to achieve significant improvements to the efficiency, accuracy, productivity, and safety of picking, put away, transportation, and retrieval and replenishment operations.

As a global transport business and industry leader, Toll recognises their responsibility to reduce the impact on the environment. This means becoming cleaner, greener, quieter and smarter.

Hydrogen is one of the future fuel sources for trucks. In an industry-leading program, Toll is introducing two hydrogen-powered prime movers in Australia that will help accelerate the broader transition for Toll and the industry.

Electric vehicles are also a key part of their future. In Australia, Toll have introduced five electric trucks this year, with 35 hybrid vehicles already part of their corporate fleet and this will continue to grow.

Toll is increasing the capacity of trucks to carry more in fewer trips, reducing pollution and carbon emissions. Toll has committed to achieving a 100% battery-electric forklift fleet by 2025 (for less than 9 tonne and exclusive of major hazard facilities).

The COVID-19 post pandemic economic effects and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine have exposed the vulnerabilities of today’s global supply chains. Supply chain leaders are required to future proof their supply chain and can do this by recognizing three new priorities being resilience, agility and sustainability, as well as the traditional objectives of cost, quality, and service and then redesigning their supply chains accordingly.

Toll is well-placed to meet those expectations and demands, and to deliver customised and integrated solutions enabling their partners to achieve success. Anywhere. Anytime.
