US Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work welcomed Australian Defence Secretary Dennis Richardson to the Pentagon overnight, where the two leaders discussed global security issues and opportunities to further bilateral defence co-operation.

Deputy Secretary Work’s spokeswoman, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson, said Deputy Secretary Work and Secretary Richardson noted the strategic, operational and tactical benefits of alliance co-operation for both nations, and exchanged insights on how to sustain robust military capabilities.
The two leaders also talked about shipbuilding and maritime security, while highlighting Australia’s receipt of their first P-8A Poseidon aircraft, the spokeswoman said.
Deputy Secretary Work noted how these advanced capabilities further facilitate the strength of the US-Australia alliance. Additionally, Deputy Secretary Work and Secretary Richardson commended progress on the implementation of the bilateral Force Posture Initiatives.
Deputy Secretary Work conveyed appreciation for Australia’s continued commitment to investing two per cent of GDP towards defence.
The former Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, Secretary Richardson began his service as Secretary of the Department of Defence on 18 October 2012. He has worked closely with the US previously during his role as ambassador of Australia to the United States from 2005 until late 2009.
