Melbourne-based Horsell has built a robust record of supporting defence and its consultants deliver the cost effective, leading-edge capabilities required by the ADF.

Celebrating 13 years in operation, the veteran and family owned and operated Horsell is one of the stand out examples of Australia’s defence consulting industry.

The company brings together a number of national and regional consultants operating autonomously at key locations around the country, supporting the company’s objectives and the complex demands of Defence.

Drew Horsell Director at Horsell, explained to Defence Connect, “Our people are our best asset. Our demographic is diverse with 24% aged 55 and over, 35% ADF veterans, 53% residing and/or working in regional Australia and most significantly we are bucking the trend in the male dominated Defence industry where we have 65% women. It is our diversity that makes us a better company.”

Horsell’s consultants draw on a wealth of experience, ranging from both government and private sector employment, which combine to form an integrated response building on the company’s reputation.

The company’s broad network of consultants provide a range of services to assist in the business of defence, helping clients to navigate the complexities of the modern environment, including:

  • Bids & Tenders – developing Defence strategies and then leading approaches to market (such as Request for Tenders, etc), evaluation and negotiation and similar services to industry to manage or support their own responses.
  • Business Analysis – offering guidance and advice on what requirements and solutions will best fit a business' needs, now and into the future.
  • Project Management – leading diverse teams to achieve outcomes instead of just outputs and maximising resources whilst mentoring client staff.
  • Publication Management – providing desktop publishing support, editing and technical writing and illustration of plans, manuals and other documents or content.

“The benefit of working above and below the line – for both government and for industry – is that we can see where the risks and opportunities are early and provide timely advice as to what the other party is expecting.”

In particular, Horsell has a long and proud history of engaging with CASG, providing technical publication services – providing a range of services including updated handbooks, instructions, manuals and servicing publications.

Most recently, the company has provided over 1250 pages of restructured and formatted technical publications for the Army’s M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank.

With content being drawn from a number of existing Australian and international publications as well as from stakeholder engagement while new content was developed by working alongside subject matter experts for this fleet of armoured vehicles.

Additionally, Horsell provides a wealth of support and services, including managing and supporting the development of bids and tenders with a focus on supporting and sustaining long term business relationships.

“We specialise in complex materiel procurement throughout Defence’s Capability Life Cycle particularly the ASDEFCON suite of contract templates. We help project teams develop the strategies to conduct an approach to market and then lead the development of the RFx from concept to release, to evaluation and negotiation.”

In the modern context, business analysis and project management have emerged as critical skills needed to succeed in a complex business environment and defence is no exception.

Accordingly, Horsell provides extensive support and services in these spaces, with a focus on ensuring that both parties achieve their desired outcomes and objectives, delivering the best result for all involved.

“Our company vision is to ‘make complex simple’. Whilst we work in complex projects, we make every effort to simplify content and process to achieve a better understanding of the outcomes for our clients and their intended audience.”

Horsell is a 100% Australian owned and based management consulting company that specialises in Defence and government related projects.

As a company, Horsell is focused on customer satisfaction and their aim is to generate a high level of repeat business.

The company, through its employees and partnerships, has a rare capacity to respond to its customers’ needs in order to provide a service level and commitment for the client.
