Veteran charity comes out in support of royal commission into veteran suicide

Leading veteran and defence charity Soldier On has come out in support of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide this week, promising to continue its support for the veteran community’s health and wellbeing throughout the findings.

Soldier On further made a submission to the royal commission to ensure that the terms of reference are broad enough to ensure that all issues pertaining to suicide in the defence and veteran community are scrutinised throughout the hearings. These include pre-enrolment factors when people apply to become members of the Australian Defence Force as well as the ongoing support that veterans receive during and after their service.

A statement from Soldier On outlines that the royal commission’s terms of reference mirror these requests.

Ivan Slavich, chief executive of Soldier On, outlined that the royal commission will be critical in avoiding veteran suicide.

“It is our hope that the royal commission and national commissioner will work closely to create an ongoing response to the issue of defence and veteran suicide, saving lives and improving the wellbeing of those who have served our nation,” Slavich said.

“Soldier On supports thousands of veterans and their family members and will work closely with them to continue to inform the royal commission and national commissioner of the needs of our veteran community now and into the future.”
