The firms have agreed to jointly explore the development of new air defence capabilities.

MBDA Italia and Rheinmetall Italia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), aimed at supporting research into air defence capability, including disruptive technologies.

The two-year collaboration is expected to involve the joint exploration of business opportunities in Italy and the international marketplace.

MBDA Italia is expected to leverage its experience producing missiles and missile systems corresponding to the full range of current and future operational needs of all warfighting domains.

Meanwhile, Rheinmetall Italia is set to tap into its experience designing, developing, and manufacturing air surveillance and tracking radars — focused on short- and very short-range air defence systems.

This latest collaboration builds on Rheinmetall’s work in the armoured vehicle space.

The company is offering its technology for a number of major defence projects across Australia, the US and Europe.

This includes its bid for the Commonwealth government’s LAND 400 Phase 3 program — an $18-$21 billion project to deliver up to 450 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to the Australian Army.

Rheinmetall recently partnered with Frontline Manufacturing to develop hulls for the Lynx IFV proposed for LAND 400 Phase 3.

The components could be exported to the US as part of the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) program.
