The defence prime has tabled a new guide outlining tips for recruiting and supporting veteran employment.

BAE Systems Australia has launched the Veterans Employment Best Practice guide, which draws from the company’s experience supporting the veteran community to share tips for “attracting, recruiting and retaining veteran talent”.

This comes off the back of the company’s endeavour to offer more thought leadership in the area of veteran employment, partly driven by its Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC).

This committee, which provides advice and governance, has proposed a number of initiatives to ensure BAE Systems is an active participant in the veteran recruitment space.

The guide includes steps organisations can follow to develop their own VAC.

Other recommendations listed in the guide focus on:

  • driving recruitment and retention;
  • partnering with external stakeholders;
  • fostering a positive culture; and
  • developing a strong governance model.

“As a veteran, I know that people who have served have a lot to offer and not just in the Defence sector,” BAE Systems Australia CEO Ben Hudson said.

“Their defence force experience means that they have an abundance of highly valued and translatable skills and attributes such as leadership, teamwork and commitment that is highly relevant and sought after by any business.

“Every employer will approach veteran recruitment differently and we’re delighted to share some of the elements that are working for us.”

The release of BAE Systems’ guide comes just days after Nova Systems announced it is signing a new partnership contract to expand StoryRight – a niche national training program for Australian veterans exploring job opportunities in the civilian workforce.

In supporting the StoryRight program, facilitated by The Hospital Research Foundation Group, Nova Systems has committed to providing training experience at a series of workshops across the country.
