WA awards contract for $87m defence infrastructure project

The West Australian government has issued a contract for the first of four infrastructure projects at the Australian Maritime Complex.

The West Australian government has issued a contract for the first of four infrastructure projects at the Australian Maritime Complex.

Building and civil construction company Georgiou has secured a contract from West Australia's McGowan government to deliver a new vessel transfer path at the Australian Maritime Complex (AMC).

The vessel transfer path will be designed to create greater connectivity between the floating dock and shipbuilding and sustainment facilities, including those operated by ASC Shipbuilding, BAE Systems and Civmec Construction and Engineering.

This is the first of four projects at the AMC, which form part of the WA government's $87.6 million investment.

The projects aim to support larger and more complex Royal Australian Navy vessels, expected to enter service in the coming years.

Other projects include a new shipbuilding facility, a major wharf extension and upgrade, and three road intersection upgrades.

Lanskey Constructions is set to deliver the new shipbuilding facility in the northern shipbuilding precinct, which is expected to activate underutilised waterfront land to support commercial shipbuilding activities and free up strategic land for RAN sustainment projects.

Meanwhile, the extension to AMC Berth 1 will involve the development of a new berth, which is expected to enable the facility to accommodate all RAN vessels, including Anzac Class frigates, Arafura Class offshore patrol vessels, and the future Hunter Class frigates.

WA Defence Issues Minister Paul Papalia said the government's investment has already delivered results.

“The improvements will enhance the AMC’s reputation as Australia’s key defence industry hub and help secure defence contracts that will grow the WA economy," he said.

“The projects align with the Western Australian Defence and Defence Industries Strategic Plan, which aims to double the value of the Department of Defence’s annual contribution to the state from $3 to $6 billion by 2030.”
