The US State Department has approved F-16 fighter jet modifications, sustainment, and equipment for the government of Ukraine in a US$310 million foreign military sale.
US Congress was notified of the possible foreign military sale by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 2 May.
The potential sale includes aircraft modifications and upgrades, personnel training related to operation, maintenance and sustainment support, consumables and accessories, spare parts, classified and unclassified software delivery, contractor engineering and logistics support services.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” according to a statement released by the US DSCA.
“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s capability to meet current and future threats by ensuring its pilots are effectively trained and by increasing its interoperability with the United States through comprehensive training with the US Air Force.
“This proposed sale aligns with international coalition contributions for the establishment of Ukraine’s F-16 program and the overall modernisation of Ukraine’s Air Force.
“Ukraine will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
“Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US government or contractor representatives to Ukraine. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”
The principal contractors will be Valiant Integrated Services, Top Aces Corporation, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Pratt and Whitney, Snap-on, and Comsetra.
