Hugh White AO is Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University.  He has worked on Australian strategic, defence and foreign policy issues since 1980.  He has been a journalist, a ministerial adviser and a senior official in the Defence Department. His recent publications include Power Shift: Australia’s Future between Washington and Beijing published in September 2010, and The China Choice: Why America should share power, first published in 2012 and since republished in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. In the 1970s he studied philosophy at Melbourne and Oxford Universities.

The Department of Defence (Defence) via the Defence Innovation Hub is seeking proposed innovations that will help shape Army’s approach to the challenges of novel weapons and novel effects in a combined arms team in a joint environment (Innovation Theme).    Defence will conduct an initial assessment of submissions in accordance with the Call for Submissions Special Notice (CFS) Terms (the Terms) and will select up to 30 respondents to display, exhibit and demonstrate their proposed innovation at Army Innovation Day 2017 (AID17). See below and the Terms for more information about AID17. Following AID17, Defence will conduct a final assessment of the submission in accordance with the Terms, taking into account information gathered at AID17, and may invite one or more respondents to participate in a Request for Proposal (RFP) process. If a proposal is successful in the RFP process, Defence will invite the successful respondent(s) to negotiate or execute an Innovation Contract. This Innovation Contract will be for the conduct of user trials and evaluations in relation to the proposed innovation, in Australian Army units within 12 months of AID17.

The University of New South Wales in Canberra (UNSW Canberra) and the Capability Systems Centre presents the inaugural Counter Non-Traditional Threats Conference and Exhibition (Counter-NTT). Counter-NTT is an inaugural conference targeted at those who have an interest in countering the non-traditional and improvised threats from chemicals, biological hazards, radiation, nuclear, toxic industrial chemicals and materials, other hazardous materials, explosives and pandemics. Guest Speaker: Major General Mulhall has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, appointed a Member of the Military Division of the Order of Australia and awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross, and also been awarded by the United States the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal. He has significant command experience, including as Commander 17th Combat Service Support Brigade, and deployed in 2006 as the Chief of Plans (Logistics), Multi-National Force - Iraq. In June 2014, Major General Mulhall deployed to Afghanistan into a senior Coalition role within Headquarters International Security Assistance Force / Resolute Support. He was also appointed from 1 November 2014 as Commander Joint Task Force 636 – the only officer to serve in that role and notable also given his concurrent Coalition appointment. He has served as Commander Joint Logistics since December 2015.
