France has announced the successful launch of a next-generation multi-mission air-to-air missile from a Rafale fighter jet.

France has announced the successful launch of a next-generation multi-mission air-to-air missile from a Rafale fighter jet.

The combat and self-defence interception missile (MICA NG), produced by MBDA, was tested in an initial development test by France’s Directorate General for Armament (DGA) on 19 June.

The DGA announced the test was a milestone in the qualification of the new-generation missile designed to enhance the air superiority of French forces.

“Carried out from a Rafale at the Mediterranean site of the DGA Missile Testing Centre of Expertise and Testing, this development firing aimed to validate the complete implementation chain of the MICA NG missile in its infrared version,” according to the DGA (translated).

“Conducted under the project management of the DGA, the program benefits from close cooperation with the manufacturers MBDA and Dassault Aviation, as well as a strong commitment from the French Air and Space Force.

“This success confirms the performance of this new-generation missile, designed to perform interception, close-quarters combat and self-protection missions in an increasingly contested air environment.

“It represents an important milestone on the road to qualification of the MICA NG, the first deliveries of which are expected by 2030.”

The MICA NG will reportedly be available in two configurations, one with an infrared seeker and the other, electromagnetic.

“In the coming months, further firings will be conducted to test the full capabilities of the MICA NG, in its various configurations and at various altitudes and speeds, including in supersonic flight. These tests will confirm the missile’s robustness and versatility in a wide range of engagements,” the DGA said.

“With the MICA NG, France affirms its ambition to remain at the forefront of air defence technology. This strategic program illustrates the ability of the DGA and its partners to design, test and deploy very high-performance weapons systems, serving national strategic autonomy.

“DGA missile tests and DGA flight tests provided overall coordination of the operation, from target implementation to test area security.

“DGA Engineering and Projects, DGA Information Control and DGA Aerospace Techniques provided their technical expertise throughout the campaign.

“Several preparatory tests were carried out using the DGA’s Fokker 100 test bench aircraft, with strong involvement from all government and industrial teams.”
