The US State Department has approved a possible US$1.07 billion foreign military sale of more than 400 air-to-air missiles to the government of Finland.
The US Congress was notified of the possible sale by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 10 September.
The possible sale includes 405 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), eight AIM-120D-3 guidance sections, AMRAAM control sections, containers and support equipment, common munitions built-in test/reprogramming equipment, ADU-891 adaptor group test sets, munitions support and support equipment, repair and return support, weapons software and support equipment.
Other items include classified publications and technical documentation, classified software delivery and support, personnel training and training equipment, US government and contractor engineering.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” according to a statement from the US DSCA.
“The proposed sale will improve Finland’s capability to meet current and future threats and enhance its interoperability with US and other allied forces. Finland already has AMRAAMs in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles into its armed forces.
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”
The principal contractor is expected to be RTX Corporation.
