The Republic of Korea could acquire more than 40 AGM-65G2 Maverick tactical missiles under a possible US$34 million US foreign military sale approved by the US State Department.

The US Congress was notified of the possible sale by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 1 October this year.

The possible sale includes the 44 AGM-65G2 Maverick tactical missiles as well as US government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services, logistics and program support.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region,” according to a statement from the US DSCA.

“This proposed sale will improve the Republic of Korea’s capability to meet current and future threats by increasing its critical air defence capability to deter aggression in the region and to ensure interoperability with US forces.

“The Republic of Korea already has Maverick missiles in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles into its armed forces. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

“Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US government or contractor representatives to the Republic of Korea. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”

RTX Corporation is expected to be the principal contractor.
