Air Force Training Group (AFTG) has seen a change of command, with Air Commodore Brett Williams formally taking command of the AFTG at RAAF Base Point Cook.

The primary role of the AFTG is to plan, manage and deliver education and training to prepare Air Force personnel for defensive action as well as public relations and team building activities for additional factions of the Air Force.

“I am honoured to assume command of such a vital and respected organisation within the Air Force,” AIRCDRE Williams said in an official changeover ceremony.

Leaving the position is Air Commodore David Strong, who said he is “confident that under Air Commodore Brett Williams’ leadership, Air Force Training Group will continue to thrive”.

AIRCDRE Strong emphasised that the role of the commander is to “care for our people, develop their readiness for conflict and contribute to Air Force preparedness”.

Under his leadership, a range of practical advancements were achieved, including graduating thousands of pilots, transitioning to the PC-21, and establishing all-through pilot training at RAAF Base East Sale.

Reflecting on his time in the role, AIRCDRE Strong reminisced on the journey his career in the RAAF has undergone, saying: “Forty-one years ago, on 14 January 1985, I walked through the gates of the RAAF Academy at Point Cook as a young cadet. Today, I stand before you at the very same location, completing my final Air Force role as Commander Air Force Training Group. It is a moment that brings my journey full circle.”

AIRCDRE Williams had previous experience in leadership and commander roles in his time serving as the commander of the Air Academy and Air Mission Training School.

In his remarks at the ceremony, which saw a flyover by the CAC Winjeel aircraft from No. 100 Squadron, AIRCDRE Williams additionally noted the capacity and capabilities of the AFTG in supporting Australia’s defence needs.

“Our people are our greatest capability. Training is a strategic capability in its own right. My vision for AFTG is simple: to be a world-class training organisation that delivers resilient, capable aviators, strengthens Air Force readiness, and enhances national defence through exceptional people, strong relationships and efficient, innovative processes,” AIRCDRE Williams said.
