Defence has announced that Exercise Pitch Black is gearing up for its biennial aerial training with global partners.
Throughout July and August, air forces from around the world will arrive at Royal Australian Air Force Bases Darwin and Tindal in the Northern Territory and RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland to conduct a range of engagement and enhancement activities.
While details of the specific aircraft Australia will be utilising in the exercise as well as which nations will be participating have not been revealed, Defence said the exercise will be “vital” in ensuring readiness and security nationally and within the broader Indo-Pacific.
“Exercise Pitch Black will improve interoperability between Australia and its regional and global partner air forces, in complex combat-like scenarios,” Defence said in a press statement.
“Flying complexity will increase over the three-week exercise, with missions building throughout the period in the Northern Territory military airspace.”
Like in previous iterations of Exercise Pitch Black, a flypast at Mindil Beach in the Northern Territory will take place, along with a public open day at RAAF Base Darwin.
Following the conclusion of the 2024 run of the exercise, Officer Commanding the Exercise, Air Commodore Pete Robinson, said it was a renowned success.
“The feedback from all international partners and our own people alike was that Exercise Pitch Black 24 was a world-class air combat training activity.”
This year will close out with a “high tempo-flying period” over the northern states, preceded by two other RAAF exercises, Diamond Storm and Southern Cross.
