Anduril Industries has unveiled Thunder, a next-generation autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to operate alongside crewed helicopters and other combat aircraft, to deliver greater range, firepower and survivability in contested environments.

Revealed at the Farnborough International Airshow, Thunder has been developed in partnership with Archer Aviation as a Group 5 autonomous tiltrotor aircraft capable of conducting armed reconnaissance, precision strike, logistics and collaborative combat missions in highly contested environments.

Unlike traditional uncrewed helicopters, Thunder has been designed from the outset as a clean-sheet autonomous platform rather than an adaptation of an existing aircraft. The hybrid-electric tiltrotor configuration combines the vertical take-off and landing capability of a helicopter with the speed, endurance and operational flexibility of a fixed-wing aircraft.

 
 

According to Anduril, Thunder is intended to operate alongside current and future crewed platforms, extending their reach while undertaking higher-risk missions that would otherwise expose pilots to increasingly sophisticated air defence systems.

The aircraft has been designed to integrate into collaborative combat operations, providing reconnaissance, targeting, strike and logistics support while remaining capable of fully autonomous flight using the company’s artificial intelligence-enabled mission systems.

Thunder’s modular design enables it to carry a range of mission payloads, including precision-guided munitions, sensors and other autonomous systems, allowing operators to rapidly reconfigure the aircraft for different operational requirements.

Industry reports indicate the platform is expected to be capable of carrying up to 10 AGM-114 Hellfire missiles or an equivalent combination of rockets, loitering munitions or counter-uncrewed aerial systems payloads.

The aircraft forms part of a growing shift towards autonomous teaming concepts, with militaries increasingly seeking lower-cost, attritable platforms capable of operating ahead of crewed aircraft in heavily defended battlespaces.

Anduril said Thunder has been informed by operational lessons emerging from contemporary conflicts, where the proliferation of uncrewed systems and advanced air defence networks has significantly increased the risks facing conventional helicopters operating close to the forward edge of the battlefield.

The company has already completed flight testing using full-scale surrogate aircraft, with the first flight of the production-representative Thunder platform scheduled for 2027.

Thunder is also expected to compete for the United Kingdom’s Project NYX, an initiative aimed at developing autonomous aircraft capable of operating alongside the British Army’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. If selected, the aircraft could enter operational service later this decade.

The announcement further expands Anduril’s growing portfolio of autonomous combat aircraft, which already includes the Fury collaborative combat aircraft and a range of autonomous air, land and maritime systems. Together, these platforms reflect the company’s strategy of delivering software-defined, autonomous capabilities that can be produced at scale and rapidly adapted to evolving operational requirements.
