Former deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Jeremy Cornforth, has been appointed as the new US consul-general in Sydney.
Cornforth, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service since 1998, assumes the role of US consul-general Sydney this month after serving as the deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan.
The new US consul-general is expected to lead US engagement in NSW and Queensland.
Cornforth has previously served in Israel, the Dominican Republic, Mumbai, India, Tunisia, Lebanon and China.
In addition, he served in the US as the El Salvador desk officer in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs and as the director of the Office of Information Management and liaison in the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ Office of Visa Services.
“A career diplomat with more than 25 years of experience, consul-general Cornforth has served across the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas,” according to a statement from the US embassy in Australia.
“Most recently, he was deputy director of the American Institute in Taiwan and now leads US engagement across New South Wales and Queensland.
“Visiting Australia for the first time, he’s eager to explore the country, embrace Aussie culture (including trying his hand at surfing), connect with local communities, and deepen the US–Australia partnership.”
Cornforth holds a BA in history from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, and is a distinguished graduate of the National War College, where he earned a master’s of science in strategic studies.
In addition, he speaks Arabic, Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
