The Northern Territory is cementing its role as a key hub for Indo-Pacific security, with the Finocchiaro CLP government building partnerships that both safeguard Australia and create lasting opportunities for Territorians.

With world-class training areas, a strong Australian Defence Force presence and the Marine Rotational Force, the NT has become a trusted partner for trilateral training and cooperation.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro met with Vice Minister Koji Kano, one of Japan’s most senior defence officials, and General Takehiro Morita, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force, to highlight the Territory’s strategic role in regional security.

The Chief Minister said the discussions reinforced the NT’s position as a reliable host for trilateral activities between Australia, Japan, and the United States, including the first joint F-35A training to take place across northern Australia during Exercise Southern Cross in July 2026.

“This was an important opportunity to strengthen our ties with one of our closest allies and ensure the Territory remains at the forefront of Australia’s defence engagement in the region,” Chief Minister Finocchiaro said.

“By working closely with senior Defence and government officials, I am making sure the Territory is well-placed for opportunities that will grow our economy, strengthen our communities and keep our region safe.”

Japan Air Self-Defense Force Lieutenant General (Ret’d) Shigeki Muto, a member of the DefenceNT Strategy Group, said the Chief Minister had effectively showcased the NT’s strategic location and its capabilities to senior Japanese Defence officials, positioning it as an ideal site for current and future Australia-US-Japan training activities.

“It was clear that the Chief Minister and her government are proud of the Northern Territory’s role in defence and regional security and will continue to support and enable the requirements of allied and partner forces, including Japan,” Muto said.

Chief Minister Finocchiaro said the Territory’s strategic importance is undeniable, and only through sustained engagement and strong advocacy can it be translated into long-term opportunities.

“This mission is part of a deliberate campaign to ensure the Northern Territory is front and centre when decisions are made about training, investment and capability,” she said.

“The Territory is sending a clear message: we are not just a participant in regional security, we are a leader and a partner of choice.”
