The Australian government has applauded the decision by Israel and Hamas to sign-off on the first phase of the US-proposed Gaza peace deal.

Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator Penny Wong welcomed the “much needed step towards peace” in a statement released on 9 October.

The US-proposed Gaza peace would see a stop to fighting between both countries and a potential release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Hamas prisoners.

The internationally identified terrorist group and elected government Hamas has reportedly confirmed it will release 20 hostages alive as part of the initial phase of the deal. The group is also reportedly advocating for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, further aid to the region and release of comrades.

Israel will reportedly release as many as 2,000 Palestinian prisoners as part of the first phase of the peace deal in exchange.

“Australia welcomes President Trump’s announcement that Israel and Hamas have signed off the first phase of the plan to bring peace to Gaza,” Senator Wong said.

“After more than two years of conflict, hostages held and a devastating loss of civilian life, this is a much needed step towards peace.

“Australia has consistently been part of international calls for a ceasefire, return of the hostages, and the unimpeded flow of aid to Gaza.

“We urge all parties to respect the terms of the plan. We thank President Trump for his diplomatic efforts and acknowledge the important role of Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye in delivering this agreement.

“Australia strongly supports the plan’s commitment to denying Hamas any role in the future governance of Gaza.

“There is a very long road to recovery in Gaza, securing long-term peace and building the Palestinian state. Together with our partners, Australia will continue to do what we can to contribute to a just and enduring two-state solution.”

Earlier today, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed his approval for the first phase of the plan.

“All our hostages will be brought home. This is a diplomatic success and a national and moral victory for the State of Israel,” he said.

“From the beginning, I made it clear: we will not rest until all our hostages return and all our goals are achieved.

“Through steadfast resolve, powerful military action, and the great efforts of our great friend and ally President Trump, we have reached this critical turning point.

“I thank President Trump for his leadership, his partnership, and his unwavering commitment to the safety of Israel and the freedom of our hostages.

“God Bless Israel. God Bless America. God Bless our great alliance.”
