The Australian government has announced concerns about cross-border military tensions escalating between Cambodia and Thailand.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement earlier this month concerning military actions escalating in the historically ongoing Cambodia–Thailand border dispute, amid reports of civilian and military casualties.
International media reports have outlined several military actions taking place, including rocket barrages, laying of landmines, air strikes and fighter jets dropping munitions on civilian areas. Several media reports have alleged at least 700,000 people have been evacuated on either side of the border.
In addition, the US government has so far unsuccessfully called for a ceasefire to the escalating military dispute.
“The Australian government is deeply concerned by the escalation of tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border and reports of civilian and military casualties,” according to a statement released by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“We call on both sides to abide by the 28 July ceasefire agreement, exercise maximum restraint and take urgent steps to de-escalate the situation.
“We ask both sides to implement their commitments under the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, facilitated by President Trump and Prime Minister Anwar as ASEAN chair, rebuild trust and confidence, and pursue a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the border dispute.”
