The US has launched strikes against Iranian boats in defensive action, according to new CENTCOM reports.

Striking in southern Iran early Tuesday morning (Australian time), the US said the strikes were conducted in order to “protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces”.

These posed threats involve Iranian boats planning and attempting to lay mines and missile establishment.

US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins spoke on behalf of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), saying the “US Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire”.

Iranian media reported that there were three explosions across and near the critical oil port, the Strait of Hormuz.

Peace talks between the nations remain ongoing, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying that conversations are ongoing.

“...pretty solid thing on the table in terms of their ability to open up the strait, get the strait open, enter into a very real, significant, time-limited negotiation on the nuclear matter, and hopefully we can pull it off,” Rubio said.

The strikes come amid a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iranian forces that has been in place since 8 April.

Iran remains in control of the Strait of Hormuz and has sole command of the direction of vessel traffic and passage despite the US attempting to enforce blockades.
