Australia’s new ambassador to the United States, Greg Moriarty, has presented his credentials to US President Donald Trump.
The officials met for the official handover ceremony in Washington DC late last month. Moriarty officially replaced previous Australian ambassador to the United States and former prime minister Kevin Rudd.
Ambassador Moriarty was previously the secretary of the Department of Defence from 2017 to 2026, responsible for strategy, policy, budget and resource allocation and stewardship of the Department of Defence.
He has also held roles in the Prime Minister’s office, as Australia’s counter-terrorism coordinator from 2015 to 2017 and deputy secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“On Thursday I presented my credentials to the President of the United States to become Australia’s ambassador,” Moriarty said.
“It’s an honour to serve Australia in Washington DC. I look forward to working with the administration to strengthen our relationship.”
Moriarty holds a bachelor of arts degree with honours from the University of Western Australia and a master’s degree in strategic and defence studies from the Australian National University.
“I do want to take the opportunity once again to thank Greg Moriarty for his service (as Secretary of the Department of Defence), and I look forward to working with him in his new capacity as Australia's ambassador to the United States,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, speaking during a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra on 28 April this year.
