Australia’s Assistant Minister for Defence is set to represent the nation at the Australian American Leadership Dialogue in the United States.
The Australian American Leadership Dialogue (AALD) has been an annual bilateral meeting between the two nations for over 30 years and commits to forming collaborations and exchanging a multitude of ideas on major governmental areas of focus such as defence and foreign policy.
As a part of the representative visit, Assistant Defence Minister Peter Khalil will meet with a range of US administration and government officials from the Senate and House, as well as state leaders.
“Held every year since 1993, the Australian American Leadership Dialogue is an important forum for advancing cooperation between Australia and the United States on the issues that matter most to our shared security and prosperity,” Khalil said in a statement.
“The Australia–United States Alliance, now in its 75th year, is built on trust, shared values and decades of cooperation in support of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
“As we confront an increasingly complex strategic environment, engagement with our American partners is essential to our alliance.
“AUKUS remains a central pillar of our defence and strategic cooperation and this week’s discussions will help ensure continued alignment on this vital program.”
The AALD is an instrumental opportunity for the goals of Australia and America to be discussed and expanded in a formal, government capacity.
As one of the nation’s most important allies, Defence said the AALD will ensure that Australia’s “strategic perspective and policy priorities” are emphasised and clearly discussed with the United States.
Defence added that the longstanding alliance with the United States is “fundamental to our national security”, with allied-focused events such as these being valuable in solidifying joint agreements and approaches to emerging challenges.
