Britain and Ukraine have launched a landmark artificial intelligence partnership, giving UK researchers and defence companies access to battlefield data from Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs to accelerate the development of military and national security technologies.
The UK and Ukraine have signed a new artificial intelligence partnership designed to combine Britain’s advanced AI research and technology sector with Ukraine’s extensive experience developing and using technology on the modern battlefield.
Under the agreement, the UK will become the first international partner to access Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs, a platform built around data collected from thousands of daylight cameras and infrared sensors operating across the battlefield.
The system captures millions of images and observations of military equipment and personnel, including tanks, artillery, air defence systems, infantry and aerial threats such as Shahed drones and reconnaissance uncrewed aerial vehicles. The data is used to train and improve artificial intelligence models.
The partnership will initially focus on defence and national security, bringing together British and Ukrainian engineers, academics, technology companies and military personnel to develop solutions to shared operational challenges.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the agreement would combine Ukraine’s front-line experience with Britain’s AI expertise to develop technologies capable of strengthening both military and domestic security.
“This groundbreaking partnership will bring together Ukraine’s unrivalled operational experience with Britain’s world-class AI ecosystem, giving us the opportunity to develop the technologies of the future, changing lives here in Britain and saving lives on the battlefield in Ukraine,” Prime Minister Burnham said.
Several pilot projects are already underway involving British start-ups Sintela, Mind Foundry and Skyral.
One project is preparing to deploy technology at a UK defence site that uses buried fibre-optic cables as a large AI-enabled sensor network, allowing operators to detect activity around protected facilities. The technology could eventually have applications across airports, railways, prisons and energy infrastructure.
A second project is examining next-generation low-power AI chips designed for drones, robotics and autonomous systems. The technology could enable future platforms to operate for longer, respond more rapidly and conduct increasingly complex tasks at the edge.
UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said: “Ukraine is pushing the frontier of defence innovation as they bravely resist Putin’s illegal invasion. From supporting with military equipment and training to co-developing cutting-edge technology, the UK will stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
The agreement forms part of the UK and Ukraine’s 100-year partnership and comes as Britain deepens its defence-industrial relationship with Kyiv. For Ukraine, the partnership provides access to Britain’s universities, researchers and technology companies, helping convert hard-earned battlefield experience and unique datasets into new capabilities.
For the UK, access to real-world combat data offers an opportunity to accelerate the development and testing of AI systems against the complex, evolving threats encountered in a high-intensity war.
The initiative highlights the growing importance of battlefield data as a strategic resource, with Ukraine’s experience providing an unusually large real-world dataset for training and evaluating autonomous and AI-enabled military systems.
It also points towards a broader model of defence innovation in which operational experience, commercial technology and artificial intelligence are brought together rapidly to develop capabilities for both current conflicts and future warfare.
