US ambassador to Australia David Brat has officially assumed his duties as President Donald Trump’s representative in Canberra.
Ambassador Brat presented his credentials on 29 September to Governor-General Sam Mostyn AC in a ceremony at Government House in Canberra.
His priorities in Australia are to deepen the defence relationship, advance the AUKUS pact, strengthen cooperation on critical minerals, and expand trade and investment.
In his first official act, ambassador Brat paid tribute to Australian service men and women by laying a wreath at the Australian War Memorial, reflecting upon more than a century of shared service and sacrifice.
“Australia has been our closest ally and friend for generations. It’s an honour to visit such an awe-inspiring tribute as ambassador,” he said.
“US and Australian soldiers have fought side by side and stood shoulder to shoulder for decades in times of war and times of peace. I look forward to furthering our longstanding defence partnership during my posting to Australia.”
Last night, ambassador Brat hosted a reception for the finalists of the 2026 AmCham Alliance Awards, which recognises industry leaders and innovators contributing to the US–Australia alliance.
“Our two nations are investing in each other more than ever before, and our economic ties have never been stronger,” ambassador Brat said.
“Maintaining this momentum by delivering on commercial deals is a top priority for President Trump.
“It was wonderful to host these AmCham Alliance Award finalists from a wide variety of sectors, including technology, cyber security, energy and space.”
Ambassador Brat previously served as senior vice president of business relations at Liberty University and was a two-term congressman, elected as the US representative for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, serving from 2014 to 2019.
He said he looks forward to meeting with government, business and industry leaders as well as everyday Aussies across the country – with a particular focus on our sports ties.
“Both of our nations are crazy about sports, and I can’t wait to get out there, whether it’s tennis, NRL, AFL, rugby or cricket,” he said.
“I’m excited to meet Australians from all walks of life and cannot wait to meet face to face.”
