The US Department of State has approved a possible US$2.1 billion foreign military sale of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement missiles and related equipment to the government of Ukraine.
Ukraine has requested to buy 500 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement missiles and non-major defence equipment items, such as PAC-3 MSE classified and unclassified spare parts and other related elements of logistics and program support on 30 October this year.
The estimated total cost is funded entirely by partners and allies.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe,” a statement from the US Department of State said.
“Ukraine will pay for this purchase with donations from Canada, Germany and Norway via the JUMPSTART program and national funds, financed by the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan. No US funds are involved in this sale.
“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s capability to meet current and future threats by improving its integrated air and missile defence capabilities.
“This proposed sale will sustain existing Patriot system operations against ongoing aerial threats. Ukraine will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.
“Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US government or contractor representatives to Ukraine. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale.”
The principal contractor will be Lockheed Martin.
