CyberOps secures Defence Department cyber readiness contract

Australian network security company CyberOps has won a contract to boost the cyber readiness of the country’s space sector by the Department of Defence.

Australian network security company CyberOps has won a contract to boost the cyber readiness of the country’s space sector by the Department of Defence.

The contract is worth $2.5 million.

The step in the project will involve building a dedicated testing and training facility, according to CyberOps director Daniel Floreani.

“The Adelaide-based facility will provide world-class testing and training to hundreds of people, to lift the cyber security posture of our space industry and enhance Australia’s sovereign capability in this key area of defence,” Floreani said in an announcement.

“With the increasing number of satellites and space-based communication systems that our population relies on, it’s essential to fortify our space cyber security defences. CyberOps is proud to provide our expertise and contribute to secure, uninterrupted use of Australia’s space assets.”

The facility will include a simulated space environment for testing hardware and communications systems and will help create space-based cyber security training material.

CyberOps hopes the systems they develop for space will also have use back on the ground.

“What we develop for space can often be used in the areas of cyber and information warfare more generally, so we’re able to enhance the security posture of Australia’s critical infrastructure more broadly,” said CyberOps’ director, Derek Grocke.

The recent Defence Strategic Review included an increased focus on both cyber operations and space as a warfighting domain.

“We must build strength in our security by seeking to shape the future rather than waiting for the future to shape us,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said at the time of the Defence Strategic Review’s release.

“That’s just as true for defence capability as it is for energy security, cyber security and, indeed, our economic security.”
