Navantia Australia’s Design and Engineering Centre is central to the company’s local naval ship design and engineering capacity.

The centre is headed by Jamie Gibbs, Navantia Australia’s chief operations officer, and focuses on helping develop the Royal Australian Navy’s future maritime capabilities as well as delivering through-life support for four warships in service with Navy.

The four warships include the Canberra Class LHD vessels and landing craft, the Hobart Class, and the Supply Class AOR.

Through its centre and partnerships with local businesses, the company helps support the modernisation and upkeep of 60 per cent of the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet.

The minister recognised the efforts of those present in supporting Australia’s national security.

The centre was established in 2017 and has strengthened the development of Australia’s future workforce providing undergraduate internship and graduate programs. Meanwhile, the company has collaborated with higher education institutions by building talent pipelines and supporting curriculum development.

Navantia Australia has also supported Australia’s veteran community through employment programs in concert with the RSL, Soldier On, and Veterans’ Affairs.

“Navantia Australia is continuing to grow and develop our sovereign capability, which means not only drawing on the best engineers and naval architects around the country, but also developing an end-to-end capability and capacity for Australia,” Israel Lozano, managing director of Navantia Australia, said.

Navantia Australia is currently proposing its Kodal LMV-M for the Australian Army’s LAND 8710 Phase 1 – Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel – Medium.
