Australian defence industry representative and Australian Army Afghanistan veteran Matt Moran has been preselected as the Liberal Party candidate for the new federal seat of Bullwinkel.

Matt Moran, an inaugural executive director of Defence West and head of strategy and government relations for Luerssen Australia, reportedly attracted 78 out of 135 votes in the preselection for the newly created Bullwinkel electoral division in the state of Western Australia.

The seat covers parts of several federal electorates such as Durack, Kalamunda, Hasluck, O’Connor, and Canning. It was also named in honour of Australian Army nurse Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the 1942 Bangka Island massacre.

Moran, an RSLWA board member and Walkley award-winning journalist, thanked the other candidates in a speech to the media following the preselection announcement.

“I’m humbled that the local members have selected me. It was a rigorous process, you know, well done to the other candidates,” he said.

“I now wait to be ratified by State Council. Thank you very much.”

In relation to the defence industry, Moran has previously acted as a government policy advisor for the Minister for Defence Industry in 2016, senior adviser to the Minister for Defence in 2018, and was the inaugural executive director of Defence West.

Moran is now expected to run against an as-yet-unnamed Labor candidate and preselected Nationals’ candidate for Bullwinkel, Mia Davies, during the next Australian federal election anticipated later this year or early next year.
